Topic For Discussion

Anju, John, and I were reviewing the discussion thus far regarding the impact of the Wal-Mart Sustainability Scorecard and we are suggesting that possible topics for the symposium workshop could be:
- What does the environmental manager need to know about the Wal-Mart Sustainability Scorecard in order to gain leverage to move his or her company toward sustainability?
- What are ways in which the environmental manager can work within the supply chain to contribute to the successful resolution to packaging reduction initiatives?

Additional Topics for Discussions:
-How can Wal-Mart leverage it’s size and power to help suppliers that are exceling on the scorecard work with other suppliers to share best practices? Can Wal-Mart facilitate this exchange to allow everyone to move forward together?
-Are companies seeing the true benefits of envinronmental sustainability? In other words, if Wal-Mart were to abandon its Scorecard would suppliers continue to move forward with their sustainability goals? How dependent is industry becoming on Wal-Mart?
You can also include the perspective of the EM working for the package supplier, the package user or for Wal-Mart/Sam’s. How do they work in concert with each other? Are there any conflicting purposes? If so, how can EMs work collaboratively to mitigate any conflicts so the sustainability initiatives can continue to be realized?
You have identified some provocative topics for discussion. The challenge will not be in finding something to discuss. How do you want to proceed on Monday?

“What are ways in which the environmental manager can work within the supply chain to contribute to the successful resolution to packaging reduction initiatives?”
That is a good topic. I think that with such a large supplier as walmart is, they have a lot of pull on manufactures or distributors to carry their products. If they have a good management style in place, I believe, they could actually affect alot of industries.
