Environmental Managers Role in the Host Community–The Lorax

Robert F Blomquist. “Six Thinking Hats for the Lorax: Corporate Responsibility and the Environment. ” Georgetown International Environmental Law Review 18.4 (2006): 691-705. ABI/INFORM Global. ProQuest. RIT Lib.

Firstly, I felt this was a great article because I thoroughly enjoyed The Lorax by Dr. Seuss as a kid. I felt that the most relevant part of the article was the “Red Hat” or “emotions” section. The author describes the idea that some people feel companies are only taking a social responsibility stance because of gaining a competitive advantage. In some cases I would believe this to be true but I also feel that this mentality teaches us environmental managers a valuable lesson. We must strive to break the perception that the only reason companies care about the community is for their own personal gain. It is our duty to truly make a company believe in protecting the host community and that it is not just about profit but protecting the community in which it lives. To me, this is the lesson at hand that we must convey to both upper management and the community itself.
