The Green Stairway

The article “The Green Stairway” is a good framework to think about the corporate context in which environmental managers operate.
The interesting question is when do environmental managers go beyond the “traditional” roles (see Exhibit 2, page 18) for each step and do something different?

This is an excellent follow up to the Green Wall, but what I am really surprise to learn is that the environmental manager is still seen as a nuisance rather than an important player in the corporate management team.
If any company is going to be compliant with the multiple government regulations and met worldwide environment standard, changes need to be made on how top management view the environmental manager. I could only speak from my company but our environmental manager is part of top management in the corporation. I hope that the trend today for the environment manager is to be in top management level rather than in the bottom.
Another item that interested me very much is the trap of ‘pursuing separate excellence’. But the paper addresses these very well in the stairway’s trap and the observation of the goals that are being pursued. These are efforts or result and the environmental progress of the company or the progress of the company’s environmental program.
