Much has been written on the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of ISO 14001. This workshop will focus on how strategic business planning may be used to maximize the benefits of ISO 14001. A model for integrating environmental business drivers into strategic business planning and then using that strategy as the foundation for ISO 14001 will be presented. Participants will also be given some background information regarding the basis for the model. In addition, they will be guided in a discussion centered on the merits of the premise and on how environmental managers can influence the process in an organization. The objective of the workshop is to garner consensus that the premise is either valid or invalid, and if it is valid, brainstorm ideas regarding how environmental managers can influence the process in their organizations.
